Winter Solstice
Finally… a turn in the tides. My friend Yukiko Amaya had a beautiful article about the solstice in her recent newsletter:
| WINTER SOLSTICE on December 21 |
We are getting closer to the longest night of the year in the Northern Hemisphere. At the depth of darkness is the beginning of light: winter solstice is the celebration of the return of light. As without, so within….the rhythm of our planet’s rotation around the Sun can be a powerful reminder of our own inner Sun, the Atman or Consciousness. Especially with the outer world so rocky, and our perceptions of them quite challenged at this time, it becomes crucial to become steadfast in our internal alignment with our inner Sun, the Supreme or Divine Consciousness.
PERSONAL RITUAL:
This Winter Solstice, take a step towards recognizing and owning your direct relationship with the Divine within, with your internal Sun. In this step, an internal or external ritual can be very powerful and useful. Create something beautiful for yourself with what you feel inspired by. Trust yourself and surrender into inner guidance. Perhaps you will be led to simply lighting a candle (physical and/or internal one in your heart center) with full awareness of what this symbolizes – the recognition of your inner Divine Light or Consciousness. Or perhaps it is taking a hike in Nature and communing in silence. Or chanting to the rising Sun. Or………
CONNECTING WITH INNER DIVINE:
Whatever you choose to do, do it with awareness, bearing Witness to this sacred act of connecting with your inner Divine and honoring the process. Then move with that awareness throughout the day, holding in alignment your intent, words and actions. In recognizing and honoring your own inner Divine, it becomes easier to truly recognize and honor the Divine in others, in all beings. The Divine is not somewhere up there, accessible uniquely through the office of some “higher” spiritual being. It is everywhere, and you are already connected to It no matter what.
SETTING AN INTENT FOR THE COMING YEAR:
This is also a powerful time to set the intent for your coming year. What is your Heart’s Desire? Take the time to become quiet enough so you can go deeper than the habitual mind and truly listen to your inner Heart. Let the desire surface and write it down. Be relaxed about it as well, though. It’s OK. You can change it if it does not feel right to you later. Once you feel you have the intent clear, put the written words on your alter, as a reminder to align yourself with this intent every day.
